A Prayer for Freedom from Guilt

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. (Romans 8:1-2)

I’ve been through seasons where my physical ability was largely limited. Met with this sense of neglecting the daily demands and desires of my children, home, and husband. Also, the feeling of falling short of the expectations of myself and others. And simultaneously guilt seemed to sneak into my struggling soul. Sometimes, even shame for not pushing myself harder or powering through the pain. Even if deep down, I believed I had little control, and knew it was nearly impossible to fill all the voids I saw. Then there have been times when guilt took hold of me regarding something I did have some say over. When I’ve made mistakes, misstepped, or messed up. Moments when, if I’m being honest, if I had taken it to God, like I should have and could have, I would’ve done things differently.

Guilt. I have felt it many times in all sorts of scenarios. And let me guess, you have too? In fact, I bet if you paused long enough to ponder it, you would locate some level of guilt stirring somewhere within today. Something you feel like you should be doing that you’re not. Something you maybe should have done or said that you didn’t. And to some degree, it weighs on you. It could also be that you overtly sinned. Or maybe, like me, you’re not even sure if the act, or lack thereof, was sinful at all. As in, you’re not 100% certain if your actions and decisions were 100% pure and justified. And your confusion somehow even leaves some lingering guilt.

But let me ask you: Have you accepted Jesus into your heart? Have you surrendered and lifted your will, ways, and heart humbly to him? Because if you have, you have been set free from any sin and misstep. You may have messed up, or you may not have at all. But either way, there is no condemnation for those of us in Jesus. I have a feeling that you know this, but I have a feeling you need this reminder repeatedly, as I do. The bold statement that opens Romans chapter 8, which says:

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 

Christ follower, you can release your guilt and your shame because Jesus has set you free. You don’t have to worry about who might be neglected because of you, what isn’t getting done because of you, or what mistake you may have made. Our Father God is in control of all things. He will use all things—even that which we think went wrong or missed—for good. He is in control. He has care of you. He has care of your people. He has care of your path and theirs. If you have asked for his forgiveness, you are forgiven. Period. And he forgives over and over. He covers every single sin and doesn’t condemn. His love is unwaveringly unconditional. 

Seek and look to the Lord, and find freedom in his unlimited forgiveness and unconditional love. Find freedom in his unfailing care of all things around you—regardless of you. There’s nothing you did that can make him love you any less. There’s nothing you are doing that will deter his grace, constant compassion, and control. And there’s nothing you will ever do that will alter his good and perfect plan. You are in his love, forever. You are free, forever.

Let’s Pray:

Father God, You are the God of my glorious freedom. You gave up everything so that I could live free from the chains and weight of guilt, shame, and every single sin. So that I could walk freely and lightly all the days of my life in your love, grace, and mercy. And though at times I tend to forget the gift of your unlimited grace, and I let guilt begin to fill me, Lord, you already paid the price to free me from it.

Remind me that there is absolutely no condemnation for those who have accepted your son, Jesus, as Christ. Give me confidence that no matter what I have done, haven’t done, or don’t do, you never condemn my repentant, humble heart. Jesus, I praise you for your gift of freedom that will never leave me, for your grace that will eternally bless me, and for the great that you are.
