Marriage is a sacred journey that brings two different lives together as one. It’s a special gift from God. But anyone who has been married for a while knows that a strong relationship takes more than just romantic feelings. It takes hard work every day and a strong spiritual foundation. Life can get very busy and stressful, and these pressures can easily hurt a marriage if we only rely on our own strength. That’s why it’s important to pray for our marriages regularly. When we pray, we welcome God’s strength, wisdom, and grace into our homes. Prayer helps us look away from our own mistakes and trust God, who created marriage in the first place. Through prayer, we find the power to stay close when life tries to pull us apart.

Here are 7 powerful prayers for a spiritually strong marriage.

1. A prayer for unity.

1. A prayer for unity.

“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” – Ecclesiastes 4:12

God, please give us true unity in our marriage. You want our relationship to have deep connections that grow stronger every year, so I ask for our hearts to join together through your Holy Spirit. Please join my heart completely with my spouse's heart. Help us keep you at the center of our marriage, creating a bond that can’t be easily broken by life’s troubles in this fallen world. Forgive us for the times we’ve sinned and let walls grow between you and us. Help us to stand together against every problem, relying on you to help us solve each one.

May we seek you together and agree on our decisions about important issues like our family, our work, and our money management. Remind us every day that we are on the same team. Teach us how to work together, celebrating what each of us does well and helping each other when we need help, so our marriage shows the powerful unity you planned for us from the start. Thank you; amen.

2. A prayer for grace and forgiveness.

2. A prayer for grace and forgiveness.

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” – Ephesians 4:32

God, please help us to live gracefully and forgive each other on a regular basis. Since no one is perfect, we’ll sometimes hurt or misunderstand each other, but I know that if we hold onto pain, anger can ruin our relationship. True love can only grow when we forgive each other quickly. When I remember how much grace you show us, help me show that same grace to my spouse. It’s easy to hold grudges or remember all the ways my spouse has let me down, but I know that doesn’t please you.

Help me to let go of my pain by taking it to you, so it won’t grow into bitterness. Empower me to truly forgive my spouse when he or she hurts me, and to ask for my spouse’s forgiveness when I hurt him or her. Give me the humility to say I’m sorry when I’m wrong. Let our home be a safe place full of grace, where we choose to love each other through our flaws, just like you love us unconditionally. Thank you; amen.

3. A prayer for wise and loving communication.

3. A prayer for wise and loving communication.

“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” – James 1:19

God, please guide every single word I say to my spouse. The words we speak have the power to either build up our relationship or tear it down. When we’re tired or stressed, our words can easily become unkind. Please teach us how to communicate with each other in wise and loving ways. Give us the self-control we need to prevent us from speaking to each other harshly or impatiently. Send us the wisdom to know when to speak and when to just keep quiet. More than anything, help us learn to listen to each other well.

Help us to really hear what we’re saying to each other and understand our true feelings and needs. Empower us to be honest with each other, while still communicating in loving and respectful ways. When we disagree, help us speak the truth with love instead of attacking each other. Let our home be a safe space where we can share our thoughts without any fear. Thank you; amen.

4. A prayer for sacrificial love.

4. A prayer for sacrificial love.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.” – 1 Corinthians 13:4-5

God, please teach me how to grow spiritually so I become less selfish and more loving. Thank you for showing me that true love is not just a feeling; it’s an action. Help me care about my spouse’s needs and be willing to make the sacrifices I need to make to meet the needs you’re calling me to meet in our marriage. Since Jesus showed us the ultimate example of this by giving up his life for us, please remind me of that when I need to overcome challenges to choose love. Teach me how to love my spouse completely and unconditionally, just like you love us both.

Help me notice what my spouse needs and serve him or her without expecting anything back. Take away my pride and my need to always get my own way. When I‘m tired or overwhelmed, give me the strength to still be kind and patient. May my spouse feel totally safe and cherished because of how I choose to love him or her every day. Thank you; amen.

5. A prayer for God’s protection.

5. A prayer for God’s protection.

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” – Proverbs 4:23

God, please send us your strong protection over our marriage and our home. In this fallen world, we must deal with the reality of spiritual warfare between good and evil forces, and we often hear messages that go against your design for marriage. Help us to guard our hearts by praying for our marriage on a regular basis. Build a spiritual wall of protection around our relationship that can’t be broken.

Guard our hearts and minds against temptations to sin in ways that harm our marriage, like lying or being unkind to each other. Keep our thoughts pure. Protect us from bad influences like pornography, and give us wise discernment about any outside relationships that could threaten our bond. Please let our home be a sacred place where you live with us and bless our shared life together. Thank you; amen.

6. A prayer for help to get through challenges.

6. A prayer for help to get through challenges.

“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” – Romans 12:12

God, my spouse and I need your help to overcome challenges during the hard times we go through in this fallen world. Every couple faces challenges that test their relationships, like money issues, health problems, grief, or parenting struggles. During these tough seasons, it’s easy to become frustrated and take our stress out on each other. But I know you can use hard times to make our faith and our marriage stronger if we rely on you for help. Please send us strength in hard times.

When we face challenges, please give us the hope, patience, and faithfulness to get through them together without turning on each other. Send us all the encouragement and guidance we need while we go through tough situations. Let us be able to hold onto the hope you give us, stay patient as we’re dealing with challenges, and stay faithful in prayer. Remind us that our troubles are temporary, but the love you give us is eternal. Teach us how to lean on each other and on you. Help us trust that you’re working everything out for our good. Thank you; amen.

7. A prayer to serve together.

7. A prayer to serve together.

“But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” – Joshua 24:15

God, please fill my marriage with a clear vision for how you want my spouse and I to contribute to your kingdom. Give us a shared purpose that goes beyond just making ourselves happy. You brought us together to shine the lights you’ve given us in this dark world by sharing your love with others. Show us how to serve together as a team. Open our eyes to the needs of the people around us, and lead us to serve in the ways that only we can contribute to your kingdom.

Help us make choices that put your will ahead of our own comfort. May our marriage show your love and faithfulness to all the people in our lives, like our children, friends, and neighbors. Guide us to make the best decisions day by day so we don’t miss out on important opportunities you bring into our lives to serve.

In conclusion, building a spiritually strong marriage is a lifelong journey of staying connected to God in prayer. So, let’s keep in touch with God, the source of all love, to help us build strong marriages. No matter what challenges we go through with our spouses, God will be faithful to hear our prayers and strengthen our marriages.
