5 Weekend Prayers—End the Week with Rest and Gratitude

In our fast-paced culture, it only makes sense that we see the weekend as our finish line. If we can just endure the relentless grind of our daily job, we can use the weekend as a chance to do nothing substantial.
However, each day is a gift from God, and as such, we should consider the weekend as a time to rest, rejuvenate, and remember what’s most important.
Consider the prayers below as a way to ease into your weekend and prioritize faith, loved ones, and the simplest of joys we wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to cultivate. It’s my prayer that they encourage you as you look to the weekend for a well-deserved reset, keeping your mind on Christ and His glorious resurrection:

1. A Weekend Prayer for Rest
Father, we were made to enjoy tending to things, working to create beauty. This was your design for Adam and Eve in the garden and a reflection of who you are: the maker and sustainer of good, lovely things.
But we as humans often strive not to be like you, but to be you. Intentional or not, we mimic Adam and Eve—we believe we can achieve an all-knowing perfection. Thus, we chase career achievements. We obsess over our hobbies. We take what was meant to be a beautiful reflection of you and warp it into our own false god, using our efforts and go-go-go lifestyle to elevate ourselves.
In your name, Jesus, help us resist this temptation. Help us recognize where we idolize our work and prioritize overproduction over you, our family, and your gift of rejuvenation.
Remind us of what it means to rest, and gift us the peace to know that just as you rested on the seventh day from creating the world, we, too, should rest. May we find this rest in who you are and in the promise that you will always sustain us, even and especially when we look to you despite our weak strivings.
In your holy name, Lord, Amen.

2. A Weekend Prayer for Gratitude
Lord, in a world infected with turmoil and chaos, we praise you for the gift of the weekend, of two days in which we can lay aside grueling routines, hard days on the job, society’s expectations, the stressful demands of finances, etc., and we can pour into life’s slower, simpler, and often far more important rhythms.
Thank you for Saturday, a day to celebrate loved ones’ birthday parties, weddings, baby showers, and retirement parties. Thank you for this day that calls for sleeping in to grant the body a break, a sweet, messy homemade breakfast with family, and visits to the library, museum, or coffee shop.
Thank you for Sunday, a day to worship your almighty name, gather with like-minded believers, receive encouragement, and enjoy an afternoon of working in the garden, reading a book, swinging on the front porch, or taking a quiet drive through the countryside.
Lord, we work all week for the sake of arriving at the weekend, so please let us treat these two days with gratitude, thanking you for the chance to get away from the office, pause the outside world’s noise, and savor your blessings.
We love you, Father. Amen.

3. A Weekend Prayer for Travel
Whether it’s a short drive one town over to visit a new antique store, a quick walk across the street to the neighbor’s, or a last-minute flight for a spontaneous weekend vacation, we ask that you protect us in our weekend travels, Father.
Guide us through our planning, as we map out the best time and means of transportation to reach our destination. Keep our travels smooth and safe. Protect us from reckless, irresponsible drivers and keep us from distractions so that we, too, are not careless in operating our vehicles. Please grant us flights that are on time, with little turbulence, and kind people in the seats all around us.
Father, when we get where we are going, may we see this destination as a means by which we can share your love. Help us see a change of scenery as a chance to rejuvenate our souls, connect with loved ones, and witness the beauty of your world.
May we travel fearlessly with your bravery and courage as our strength, and may we always remember that heaven is the ultimate destination for all of your children.
In your holy name, Lord God, Amen.

4. A Weekend Prayer for Worship
Lord, as we enter your Sabbath rest and prepare to arrive at your sanctuary, gift us with a morning that’s slow enough and quiet enough to soak in the beautiful opportunity we have to freely worship you without fear or shame.
Around the world, others are murdered for believing in Christ for their joy and salvation, yet we are able to gather together, in one heart and mind, to unabashedly celebrate your salvation.
Let us not be afraid to worship you with the ultimate humility, and may we use this day as an opportunity to encourage others. Thank you for the church community you have blessed us with, and may we serve them with your heart of service.
Gift us with patience, creativity, and endurance as we lead Sunday School classes, teen break-out groups, or any other Sunday morning responsibilities. Help us hand out coffee, direct parking lot traffic, and hand out the communion elements with joy. Help us as we play on the worship band, give our tithes, and sign up for church outreach with gladness.
We love you, Jesus. Amen.
As the Psalmist said, may we seek you and your holiness with such passion that the only thing we can say is, “Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked” (Psalm 84:10).

5. A Weekend Prayer for the New Week
Lord, it’s far too easy to dread Monday, whether the early morning alarms, hectic breakfast routines, or a demanding boss. Even if our complaints about the daily grind of life are legitimate, don’t let the enemy take control of our minds. Don’t let him use the not-as-fun parts of life to grow bitter, pessimistic, impatient, or filled with complaints.
While the world begs us to buy into the idea of “Sunday scaries,” where we collectively dread the weekdays, may we be filled with faith in who you are: a God of hope and good things, no matter what day of the week it is.
Gift us with a rested body, clear mind, and energetic spirit to tackle the week ahead, looking for ways to witness to others about your love and be your hands and feet.
Thank you for fresh beginnings each morning, day after day, week after week. Time after time.
In your almighty name, Lord God, Amen.
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23
As you approach the weekend, it’s my hope that these prayers fill you with conviction, inspiration, and an undeniable need to rest in God’s mercy and grace.
