What Is ChatGPT for Teens and How Does It Work?
OpenAI has released a new version of its artificial intelligence platform, ChatGPT, specifically for teenagers, with enhanced safety protections, study tools, parental controls, and learning support features to help them succeed in school.
It is amazing how far we’ve come as a society, continuing to develop tools meant to help us in our everyday lives. Artificial intelligence is one of them, and it is here to stay, and it is being utilized more and more in our society each day.
According to OpenAI’s website, ChatGPT for teens was created “to support moments outside the classroom when help is not always available, while keeping teens engaged in an active and collaborative learning process. A teen studying for a test, for example, can ask ChatGPT to explain an unfamiliar concept, work through a practice problem, and check their understanding. If they ask for a quick answer, ChatGPT for Teens can guide them toward the steps and questions that help them work through it themselves.” Although it sounds promising in its features, there is a growing risk of overreliance that prevents students from thinking and studying for themselves.
When Does AI Help Learning—and When Does It Replace It?
I mean, how many times have students used ChatGPT to compose an essay for them? Just because the platform has that capability doesn’t mean that we should use it to avoid doing the work. It is important for us to learn and grow, for our benefit and for others. As Christians, we recognize that we are to do things for the glory of God (1 Cor. 10:31). This is imperative, as it keeps our focus on Him rather than on ourselves. The moment we begin to elevate anything above God, it’s idolatry. Sadly, many have fallen into the trap of idolatry of technology, a problem exacerbated by the growing presence of AI platforms.
I saw Toy Story 5 earlier this year (great movie, by the way), and I appreciate how relevant its message about artificial intelligence was. It’s pretty much here to stay, and if you’re not careful, it can very much take over your life. How often have we been socially disengaged from one another due to being on our phones? Or, generally speaking, we tend to pull out our phones the moment we have nothing else to do. There’s no discipline or direction, only an endless and mindless amount of brainrot. That is not only unhealthy for us as human beings, but especially as Christians because we are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2).
Why Does Christian Discernment Matter When Teens Use AI?
As Christians, we believe in the importance of discipleship, primarily in growing in following our Lord Jesus Christ as we seek His Word and do His will. When the apostle Paul urges Christians to renew their minds in Romans 12:2, it is in response to 1) not conforming to the world and 2) understanding what the will of God is. Therefore, one important element of discipleship is discernment, as it helps us distinguish truth from error and right from wrong.
This is critical when approaching technology such as ChatGPT for Teens and similar AI platforms, because there is always the risk of error, whether it's omitting facts or presenting false information. It is easy to assume that AI has all the answers, but quick to forget that it is limited because it functions according to its programming. Clearly, AI wasn’t self-created; it was created by human beings who are both fallible and sinful.
How Can Teens Use AI with Wisdom Instead of Dependence?
Discernment is also a form of wisdom, as it involves distinguishing truth from error. Wisdom is more than information; it is the practicality of applying what you are learning. Wisdom is required for our lives and in living for the Lord. As Proverbs 1:7 states, the fear of the Lord is wisdom. The fear of the Lord is the foundational principle for all wisdom. Additionally, God provides us with wisdom upon our request. As James 1:5 states, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”
How encouraging to know that God gives wisdom to His kids! Also, how sad it is that we often overlook this principle because we go by our own understanding and our circumstances. Friends, it doesn’t have to be this way! Parents, it is imperative that the Lord is the foundation of your home so that you can lead your children in a godly manner. Additionally, it is important to teach your children how they can apply wisdom in their lives so they can be good stewards of their time, energy, and resources.
They must be attentive to these matters; otherwise, they will be overtaken by them. Earlier, I mentioned the danger of idolatry, which is anything we prioritize above God, and we are also reminded to depend on Him with our lives. Yes, we have ChatGPT, but the world got along fine without it. This isn’t to diminish its help but to properly steward it in its place without any overreliance. Let us be responsible in how we live, not aimlessly wasting our time but living for God’s glory. Whatever tools we have, including AI, may they be to God’s glory.

How Can Parents Help Guard Their Children’s Hearts Online?
Therefore, as Proverbs 4:23 states, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Friends, let me ask you an important question: how are you guarding your heart today? And if you are parents, how are you guarding your kids' hearts today, and how are you teaching them to guard their hearts?
As Christians, we recognize that the heart is the center of one’s life, not just as an organ but also as the center of one’s being. Therefore, we must guard it and nourish it. Let us not be overtaken by worldly things but constantly nourish ourselves in the Scripture and live according to God’s will.
Why Can AI Never Replace Discipleship at Home?
Additionally, we must discipline the next generation, whether they are our own children or those in the church. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 is an excellent passage that stresses the importance of diligently teaching our children. The Scripture states as follows:
“And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” Deuteronomy 6:6-7
How Can Christian Families Use AI for God’s Glory?
As we come to a conclusion here, let us fulfill our duties as parents and caregivers by diligently discipling the next generation. That is your first ministry at home, and it is your God-given duty and responsibility to carry that out. Far too often, we let others disciple them without doing it ourselves. This isn’t to say that additional help is bad, but it is when it is at the expense of or neglect of your own. Teaching one’s child requires diligence and consistency. Just has this text highlights the time of day in teaching them the Scriptures; it is a good model for parents to disciple their children in the things of God as well as for everyday life. May we diligently uphold these truths to the glory of God.
